| Calcutta University is one of the oldest universities established in 1857. This University has a glorious tradition of producing illustrious teachers, outstanding scientists and a steady stream of brilliant students spanning all branches of human knowledge. The country's only Nobel winner in physics, C.V. Raman, was associated with the physics department of this University while he was engaged in discovering the Raman Effect. Meghnad Saha, Satyendranath Bose, Jagadish Chandra Bose, Sisir Mitra, Keddarreswar Banerjee, Shambhunath Dutta, N. N. Das Gupta were some of the outstanding scientists of our country who were associated with this University as teachers. The University houses the ancient history museum. Two institutes of international repute, namely, Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics and S. N. Bose Institute for Basic Sciences, had evolved from the various departments of this University. | |

Calcutta University is currently spread across the city in eight campuses : University College of Science (popularly known as Rajabazar Science College) which houses Science and Technology Faculties of the University, College Street, Campus houses the Administrative Offices as well as part of Arts and Commerce Faculty, Ballygunge Circular Road Campus houses Science and Agricultural and Alipore Campus. In addition, the University has eight centres imparting specialized multidisciplinary education in various fields. The University has about 650 full-time faculty members and about 3000 students in various post-graduate and technology (B Tech, M Tech and M Phil) courses. It has nearly 230 Undergraduate Colleges affiliated to it. |

| The
Distributed Information Sub-Centre at the University of Calcutta was established
in 1993 under the Biotechnology Information System (BTIS) programme of
DBT, with an objective to work as a resource institution in the area of
Biotechnology for providing bibliographic and other database search, Molecular
Modelling and structural analysis support. The Centre is also developing
databases and has initiated bioinformatics awareness programmes with the
advanced networking facilities. The centre is equipped with state-of-the-art
hardware and software. The hardware includes an Apolo workstation, LAN
system. Users can avail the facility to use the optical fibre and the UTP
LAN backbone for telneting into the Apollo workstation. The Centre has
developed softwares like NUPARM, NUCGENE and NUVIEW to analyse nucleic
acid structures and protein structures. Apart from microcomputer based
softwares like Rasmol, Oligo, MUltalin, RNA-fold, Predict 7, the Centre
is offering services based on Internet-based resources on websites. The
Centre is also continuing to develop the information content of the Methanog
database. The Bioinformatic centre with the University of Calcutta is maintaining
a symbiotic relationship in providing rich source in information handling
and optimal resource sharing in respect to manpower and services to users
for information retrieval and to enhance the traditional curricula through
distributed learning courses by sophisticated Computers and network-based
systems. A prototype of a Home page is being developed in which DISC would
form the basic part. The Centre also provide services to the users in various
disciplines of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The year-wise bibliographic
and databases like Medline CD-ROM Diskettes, Chemical Engg. & Biotech
CD-ROM, EMBL CDSEQ, Protein Databank etc. is currently available with the
Centre. The Centre is providing Molecular Modelling and Structural Analysis
support and recently obtained as SGI O2, courtesy AICTE, which is housed
and integrated with the existing DISC facility. For molecular modelling
and simulation, Hyperchem version 3.0 for windows is used performing single
point calculations, Geometry optimization and Molecular Dynamics using
both semi-empirical quantum mechanics and Molecular Mechanics methods.
The Centre has provided informatics backbone in various awareness programmes,
at the orientation and Refresher course level and workshops for College
and University teachers through demonstration of Internet, E-mail, Medline
bibliographic search as well as sequence analysis. The Centre specialises
in developing the human resource in information handling and processing.
Each year the Department trains students of various disciplines who participate
in course run by the Centre. Distributed Learning courses, delivered through
sophisticated computers and network-based systems, is benefiting tremendously
from the resources the University has to offer.
